Few things are more familiar in an Irish home than putting the kettle on and asking, “Will you have a cuppa?” Tea has become part of everyday Irish hospitality — shared around kitchen tables, offered to visitors, poured during long conversations and relied upon for everything from an early-morning start to a quiet break in the afternoon.

Ireland has developed its own distinctive tea tradition, with generations growing up around familiar names such as Barry’s, Bewley’s, Lyons and Thompson’s/Punjana. Cork tea blenders, Dublin merchants and Belfast tea families have all played a part in a tea culture that stretches back well over a century. Strong blends made with teas from East Africa and Assam have become particularly associated with the rich, full-bodied cup enjoyed in Irish homes.

But the Irish cuppa is about more than the tea itself. It can mean catching up with family, welcoming someone into the house, sitting down after a long day or solving half the world’s problems over a pot of tea. The teapot, milk jug, biscuit tin and familiar question of whether anyone wants another cup are small pieces of an everyday tradition that generations recognise.

Alongside the traditional pot of strong black tea, Ireland now has independent tea merchants and specialist businesses exploring loose-leaf teas, herbal and fruit infusions, green teas and blends from around the world. Traditional tea culture and newer speciality tea experiences can comfortably sit at the same table.

Whether you are searching for Irish breakfast tea, a traditional strong blend, loose-leaf tea, herbal infusions, a specialist tea shop, beautiful teaware or simply the ingredients for a great cuppa, AskSpud.ie helps you discover tea businesses and suppliers across County Dublin.
